Buddy coaching wasn't an issue tonight. The Hawks went up against a strong home team. If you look around the league right now, the teams that are good at home aren't generally good at home. Instead, they are great at home. The Spurs are a great home team. In fact, this was the first game where they clearly missed big Al's presence. So I'll take 6-2 without him. This was just one of those games. Besides, Bonner is a certified scrub. He killed the Hawks tonight. Odds are this was the last game this season he practically catches fire and kills a team by himself. Thats not good coaching. Thats an NBA player finding his shot and other NBA players understanding that the man needs the ball in his hand. Now on that note, the obvious issue was defense tonight. The Hawks played little outside of Jeff's on the ball good defense. Coach Drew did what he could to stop the bleeding, but after a while, he realized it was better to prepare for Friday's matchup in Detroit.

Also, if you look at the +/- numbers there is a stark contrast. All the Hawks' starters are near break-even. Everyone on the bench who played at least 13 minutes averaged around -20. This victory came about because the Spurs' second unit, which included rookie Corey Joseph, completely outplayed Atlanta's veteran bench. Again, coaching.

Greg Popovich showed tonight what superior coaching can do with inferior talent. Just imagine if the Hawks had had a top 10 coach on the bench for the last 3-5 seasons. Think about what could have been.
